The Impact You Will Make

  • Build strong empathetic relationships within your organization and with your Engineering leadership peers and stakeholders.
  • Develop the vision and roadmap strategy for the Runtime SRE org to provide proactive solutions for how Grubhub should approach reliability.
  • Raise the engineering bar. Build high-quality SRE teams and design the teams to scale and meet the needs of the wider Engineering organization.
  • Own and build-upon our established SRE practices (SLOs, Failure Analysis, Postmortems, Capacity Planning, Chaos Engineering, Architecture Designs, etc)
  • Own the Runtime SRE project roadmap, charter, and teams.
  • Use data and telemetry combined with excellent written and verbal communication skills to promote your teams agenda
  • Mentor and grow Engineering Managers and Principal-Level Site Reliability Engineers
  • Conduct performance reviews, goal setting, and career development exercises
  • You’ll set goals, roadmaps, and charters with your teams. Conduct 1:1s, performance reviews, sprint planning, project management, etc.
  • You’ll partner closely with other leaders in the Engineering organization to set clear expectations on priorities and company goals.
  • Your teams will drive reliability and observability improvements in the services within the vertical you are embedded in. Using SLOs and other telemetry data, you’ll help your teams make informed decisions on where reliability challenges may exist and help design and build solutions to improve them.
  • Your teams will build and improve internal tools and automation software to make maintaining production services easier and safer.
  • SREs in the “Runtime Engineering” org embed within the Software Engineering verticals. Your teams will co-own critical production service designs to ensure a high bar of reliability is achievable and measurable.

What You Bring to the Table

  • Experience as a Principal-level or Director-level Site Reliability Engineer working on extremely high throughput systems. You should understand how to scale a distributed system, failure modes, monitoring, et cetera.
  • Team LeadershipLedaership experience.  The team is 30+ with 5 direct reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Partner with cross-functional peers and other stakeholders.
  • Prior experience managing managers (Project management, roadmapping, goal setting, calibration, mentoring, etc)
  • Software Engineering experience: Python, Java, Go, or a similar object-oriented language
  • Microservice Architecture and Application design experience
  • Distributed monitoring experience: SLOs, metrics, tracing, etc
  • Working knowledge of Cloud technologies (AWS, GCP, Compute/Containers, Storage, etc)
  • Highly trafficked web-based service experience
